Building the Future: Porterville College Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Student Center

Porterville College marked a historic milestone this morning as campus leaders, students, and community members gathered to break ground on the highly anticipated new Student Center Building. The ceremony ushered in an exciting new era for campus life, showcasing a vibrant vision designed specifically around the needs, creativity, and growth of PC students.

The program was opened by Roger Perez, Director of Communications & Community Relations, who welcomed guests and set a celebratory tone for the morning. Educational Advisor Nicholas Britt delivered the Land Acknowledgement, followed by a moving Local Yokuts Blessing given by Willie J. Carrillo, Director of Development for the Native Star Foundation. Porterville College President Primavera Monarrez then officially welcomed attendees, highlighting how this project honors our students—the fundamental reason behind everything we do at PC.

Designed to serve as the new heartbeat of campus life, the Student Center will provide dedicated meeting and study spaces, versatile areas where students can gather to collaborate or relax, and expanded facilities for student clubs to connect, host activities, and expand their reach. Creativity and student engagement remain at the core of the design, which also features an adaptable indoor-outdoor event space perfect for campus-wide gatherings, performances, and celebrations.

The voices of past and present students took center stage during the ceremony. Alumni speaker Carlos Rodriguez, a PC graduate and former ASPC President, reflected on the institution’s impact, while current ASPC member Andrea Devora shared what this new space means for current and future Pirates. Kern Community College District (KCCD) Interim Chancellor Dr. Sean Hancock offered remarks on behalf of the district, followed by Associate Vice Chancellor of Construction Daniel Reed, who delivered an update on the facility layout and upcoming construction timeline.

This transformative project was made possible through a significant donation from the MacKenzie Scott Foundation, along with additional institutional and district funds. Following special proclamations and presentations from local representatives, speakers and guests took up shovels for the official groundbreaking photo opportunity, taking a momentous step forward together for Porterville College.
